Lake of Memory
Those years, those past memories, have long since sunk into the lake of memory. Some unintentional events might ripple on the surface, only to return to calm.
My sister said, "I remember someone so clearly because of you." But I smiled awkwardly, a helpless awkwardness. Suddenly, I didn't know what to say, because, sister, the person you remembered, I can no longer recall her face. How ironic! The person once so unforgettable has long since vanished without a trace in the vast sea of people.
If you hadn't casually mentioned it, perhaps the memory would have slowly settled into the quiet of the night. Now, looking back, there's no longer that faint sadness, only a touch of melancholy. In those youthful days, how many people did we meet who stirred our hearts? In that innocent season, a tulip bloomed in my life, warming my youthful years.
Meeting was fate. It was an August when sunflowers were in full bloom, and a blue tulip silently entered my eyes.
Some connections fade away because of affectation. Perhaps it was naiveté, or perhaps it was caring too much. I acted relentlessly in those years, changing my ways, gradually destroying our connection. It was only in that loud shout that echoed through the classroom that I realized our familiarity had turned into estrangement through my affectation.
Sadness, sorrow, and reluctance always arrive slowly after loss. Only at the end of that connection did I learn to cherish it. But I found everything had already vanished with the wind, and any words seemed powerless and pale. Because of my own actions, I had no reason to stay in that city, so I fled that remote town in a sorry state. After that, our encounters were
few and far between, but each time, my heart fluttered. Long afterward, we kept in touch, but lacked topics to talk about. Before the Spring Festival, you said we hadn't seen each other in a long time and we could have a good chat when you came back. But I lacked the courage to face you again.
Six years later, some things are strikingly similar, reminding me of that story. Bringing it up again took on a different meaning, and unexpectedly, it disturbed your peaceful state of mind.
That night, slightly drunk, I lost your contact information. The moment I turned on my phone and saw your message, I frantically searched for everything, hoping to make up for my mistake. But when I sobered up, I was so calm, only to realize that your face in my memory had long since become blurred. I was just reminiscing about our past, or perhaps I just cherished the feeling of liking you back then, simply loving my own fantasy within my own imagination.
