How can a restless heart be soothed?

The original nature of all things tends towards simplicity, and the inherent nature of the human heart also tends towards simplicity. The human heart, by its very nature, should be peaceful, quiet, gentle, simple, and wise. These are the most beautiful flavors and the truest forms of the human heart. However, not everyone can maintain such beauty; it will inevitably sway from time to time, even becoming ugly, distorted, and turbulent. Therefore, the human heart begins to change, becoming unsatisfactory and unpredictable. The restlessness begins here and spreads wildly, even to the point of madness. Thus, the restless youth is born, like a flea crawling on a horse's back thinking it is galloping, hence the name "restless."

A heart that is constantly turbulent like this is certainly not a good thing. Because of this constant turmoil, it is difficult to calm down, and even if it does calm down, it is only a temporary softening, never truly soothed. Therefore, the fuss of those who study Buddhism, those who believe in Buddhism, those who cultivate Taoism, those who spread the Tao, masters and luminaries—even ordinary people are fussing. What are they all fussing about? Of course, they are tirelessly fussing over fame, fortune, power, wealth, and lust, like bedbugs crawling in a dung heap, forgetting their identity, losing their self-respect, and destroying their humanity.

As human beings, we should restrain ourselves. A restrained heart will not continue to create evil, nor will it continue to infect and lure more people into the dung heap. If the heart is at peace, that is a blessing, that is merit, that is immeasurable virtue. Because a heart that is no longer fussy, no longer cunning, no longer deceitful—that is a righteous heart, righteous conduct, and righteous progress. However, the fickleness of the human heart is always controlled by desires, and unless you are no longer controlled by desires, it is indeed very difficult.

Living a fulfilling life is not about following your own temper, hobbies, greed, stubbornness, foolishness, or self-centeredness. This is not living a fulfilling life, but rather living an ugly and repulsive one.

Let your heart be more peaceful, and you will not fuss so much, wasting your time and energy; your life will be happy and fulfilling. Let your heart find more peace, and you will avoid madness, greed, and overexertion; your life will be healthy and smooth. Let your heart find more wisdom, and you will avoid foolishness, being easily fooled and exploited. Then your life will be free of regrets and a pitiful old age. This requires not just words, but action.

People live in countless ways, riddled with flaws, yet few understand the preciousness of life. Don't torment yourself; don't strive for worldly fame and fortune. Instead, learn to find peace within your six senses, learn to observe, learn to perceive the gradual tranquility. You can do it, and you must do it—that's all.
