Ordinary days, ordinary mindset

Confucius once praised Yan Hui, saying, "A single bamboo bowl of rice, a gourd of water, living in a humble alley—others would find such hardship unbearable, yet Hui does not change his joy. How virtuous is Hui!" I've always loved this saying, and I admire Yan Hui's ordinary life, his tranquil state of mind revealed in the mundane details. Isn't this what ordinary people's lives are like? Simple meals, thirst-quenching water, a humble shelter from the wind and rain, no great wealth or status, far removed from the ups and downs of life and death. Though their hearts may be ordinary, they enjoy a simple peace. Those who can find joy in such ordinary days are truly engaged in life!

People say, "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication," but those who truly live ordinary lives are not content with the ordinary; instead, they are troubled, resentful, and scheming to live an extraordinary life. "I'd rather cry in a BMW than laugh on a bicycle"—isn't this a manifestation of not being content with an ordinary life? I wonder, on the scales of tears and laughter versus profit and desire, which weighs more?

Ordinary life is not mediocrity. It means not being calculating, not striving for fame or fortune, not complaining, and not looking on with indifference. Ordinary life is a clear-headed acceptance, a magnanimous self-respect, and a broad-mindedness that encompasses all. The grass is ordinary, yet it uses its gentle life to pave a green expanse; the flowing water is ordinary, seemingly weak, yet it can pierce even the hardest rocks; a mother's love is simple, yet it can move even the strongest to tears…

The contentment of “watching the flowers bloom and fade in the courtyard without being disturbed by honor or disgrace, gazing at the clouds drift and gather in the sky without caring about their comings and goings” is ordinary life; the tranquility of “picking chrysanthemums by the eastern fence, leisurely gazing at the southern mountains” is ordinary life; the ease of “walking to the end of the watercourse, sitting and watching the clouds rise” is ordinary life. Only by focusing on the ordinary days can we, in the midst of ordinary life, use an extraordinary mindset to clearly understand and deal with others.

So let's maintain a peaceful mind. In the mundane details of life, in the hustle and bustle of the world, let's live ordinary days with the lushness of grass, the clarity of flowing water, and the brightness of the sky. Like Yan Hui, no matter how unbearable life's troubles may be, we can still find joy in the ordinary, accepting gains and losses with equanimity! Those who can make ordinary days fulfilling are the most extraordinary people in life!
