Reasons for abstaining from killing: Three things one cannot bear, three things one dares not do

Killing is the first of the Five Precepts in Buddhism, and the most important thing for practitioners to begin with. There are now some people who say that all living things in the world should be eaten by humans; they also say that if humans didn't eat them, then pigs, sheep, chickens, and ducks wouldn't be able to survive in the world. (If people didn't eat cats, why aren't there many cats in the world?) Such fallacies truly mislead the world. I will now explain the reasons why people should abstain from killing. The reasons for abstaining from killing are three things one cannot bear and three things one dares not do.     First, what are the three things one cannot bear?     They all have physical forms, all have consciousness, and all suffer. To sacrifice their infinite suffering to satisfy one's immediate appetite is the most cruel and unreasonable thing in the world. Consider other creatures; when captured, they either flee in terror, cry ou...

The harms of killing and the merits of releasing animals

According to the recitations of the Bon religion composed by Guru Padmasambhava     , in ancient times, some Bon followers built sacred tombs and slaughtered deer and other wild animals to sacrifice to the Bon gods.     At that time, King Trisong Detsen, witnessing the Bon religion's practice of offering flesh and blood as a virtuous act, asked Guru Rinpoche, "Revered Guru Rinpoche, the tenets of Bon are completely conflated with sin. They slaughter living beings to sacrifice to the gods. What karmic consequences will they face in this life and the next? Please, Guru, speak frankly."     Guru Rinpoche sadly replied, "Your Majesty, building Bon tombs is like building archery ranges for cruel subjects. Those who killed in the past will surely be reborn into the sinful butcher caste, and in this life they will also enjoy hunting wild animals. After death, they will immediately fall into the Vajra Hell, unable to find liberation."   ...

Stop killing!

Masters and Friends: Greetings!     As the new century approaches, I am delighted to transcend time and space to sincerely communicate with you all, and to jointly create auspicious conditions for the Dharma. In this world, life is the most precious thing. When we are on the verge of death and are saved, it is more joyful than gaining all the wealth in the world; conversely, if our lives are taken, the suffering is countless times greater than losing everything. This is true for us humans, and it applies to other life forms, from lions and tigers to insects and ants—all are equally afraid of death.     Although they cannot speak, their sense of suffering is no different from that of humans. As the most intelligent of all beings, shouldn't we, as humans, put ourselves in their shoes, extend this compassion to animals, and live in harmony with them, filling the world with peace and happiness? Currently, in the pastoral areas of Tibet, the killing of...

The Bright Moon in Qin Dynasty in Dream of the Red Chamber

Duanmu Rong: A crane's shadow crosses the cold pond, a cold moon buries the flower's soul. Only     when the flower is extremely pale does one know its true beauty; how can jade be without flaws when sorrow is abundant? Wine is served in the wind, the horn and zither play a clear melody; later, the path is covered in moss, rain beats against the crabapple blossoms.     Shi Lan: Roots and lotus share a single fragrance, a life's experiences are truly heartbreaking. Since two lonely trees grew in different places, the fragrant soul has returned to its homeland.     Xue Nu: Cherishing her fragrant beauty, she hides her door by day, carrying a water jar to water the mossy basin. Rouge washes away the autumn steps' shadow, ice and snow summon the soul of the dew-covered steps.     Chi Lian: Outside the peach blossom curtain, the east wind is soft; inside the peach blossom curtain, morning makeup is lazy: outside the curtain, peach b...

Who is poisoning our minds?

In this era of cultural convergence and integration, we have absorbed much of the essence of Western culture, but unfortunately, we have also been swept up in much of its dross. Health and harm coexist for many. An angel in one hand and a devil in the other purifies and tempts our souls.     We have changed, becoming more restless and uneasy. As for our original cultural roots, they have been abandoned as we embrace new things. We wander and feel lost at the crossroads of cultural exchange.     A frenzied openness and avant-garde style have become the mainstream lifestyle for many. The profit-driven nature is driving out another kind of greedy nature. Perhaps while poisoning the minds of others, we are also unknowingly poisoning our own. Perhaps in our frenzied openness and avant-garde style, we have inadvertently provided others with a path to make a living and get rich.     As modern people, we often watch television, go shopping, or s...

The tragedy of victory

I've always wanted to write an article about national sentiment, but I've hesitated because I fear such a controversial piece would become a source of trouble. I'm someone who dislikes getting involved in disputes and is afraid of trouble. I'm also afraid of being unable to handle public scrutiny due to my poor speaking skills. Therefore, I've remained silent, letting my thoughts churn.     But the story of Yu the Great controlling the floods teaches us a lesson: when facing floods, blocking is the worst strategy; only dredging is the best. Similarly, suppressing my thoughts is the worst strategy; releasing them is the best. So I'm prepared to speak my mind, and thus, I'm prepared to become the target of public criticism.     Japan and China are neighbors, and Japan once oppressed and humiliated China. It's a pain that can never be forgotten. However, since the concept of a nation existed, morality has been latent. While justice seems to be held b...

A recent news story about a university running over a stray dog has surfaced as a trending topic on Weibo. According to netizens, the incident occurred at Hubei University of Technology, where students were playing ball on the playground. A stray dog appeared among the students and joined them. Initially, the dog showed no hostility, but it began chasing the students. Finally, the students sought help from the university security office to get the dog off the playground. The security office responded to the students' plea and tried various methods to drive the dog away, but it was uncooperative. Ultimately, the security office deployed a campus patrol car, which ran over the dog four times. This incident immediately attracted attention online, with many netizens expressing their opinions. Three main viewpoints emerged: One viewpoint: The university's handling of the matter was severely inappropriate; such an extreme method of treating a dog is unacceptable, espec...

Don't let life leave regrets

Gradually, we've all forgotten who we were, forgotten our vows, forgotten our promises. That year, we agreed to go to the same high school together, but now everything has changed, and tears are flowing. I was naive that year too, my dreams so grand, so carefree. But now, they've all vanished like bubbles! Don't hate how fast time flies; it's because you didn't cherish it. Sometimes, let the past be the past. A true hero doesn't dwell on past glories. Living each day to the fullest is the real key. If you don't want regrets in your life, seize the time and work hard! Time never waits for anyone. People strive for higher goals, just as water flows downhill. What kind of life you want in the future depends on your efforts today. So no matter how difficult things are, as long as we are dedicated, hardworking, and persistent, success will beckon us. Friends, it's time to start working hard! Don't let your life be filled with regrets. Although we wil...

If you're not afraid of death, what else do you have to fear?

Recently, I heard heartbreaking news: a teacher jumped to her death. She was eight months pregnant. Hearing this, I couldn't sleep. Perhaps you think I'd sympathize with this woman, but you'd be wrong. I sympathize even more with her parents and husband. The dead don't suffer, but the living will forever carry a heavy burden of grief, forever heartbroken.     Living is difficult nowadays; dying is indeed easier. One can choose any way to end their life. In recent years, we've frequently heard of suicides: three high school students committed suicide because of love; a university professor committed suicide because of a promotion; my classmate committed suicide because of her husband's infidelity. We can't say those who commit suicide are cowards, because death is something most people fear deeply, yet they weren't even afraid of death. They had the courage to die but not the courage to live. If death is a momentary impulse, isn't the price paid ...

The left eye smiles, the right eye sheds tears.

Life is like a cup of coffee; those with sugar find it sweet, while those without find it bitter. I certainly love sweet coffee, but fate has given me this bitter cup. Seeing others enjoy sweet coffee, I long to have that too. But everyone's luck is different; perhaps fate has destined you for bitter coffee. And so, I've grown accustomed to this bitter coffee, gradually accepting this reality. I know this is my destiny; no matter how hard I try to achieve something, things will turn out the way I wish. I don't understand why others are so successful, even when they encounter setbacks, things always improve, but for me, everything seems to get worse. The higher the hope, the greater the disappointment.     When I'm lonely, I think of every possible way to escape it; even just going for a walk alone or spacing out is a happy thing. But I'm also afraid of this loneliness, afraid that others will know how lonely I am. I'll be pitied… My friends seem so happy ch...

Huangguoshu on campus

In my childhood, I held your neck, whispering my dreams in your ear. In spring, you embraced a verdant world, letting me grow under your protection. I fluttered my wings, slowly setting sail. From the March winds, I understood the whispers of youth ; from the May rains, I understood the verses of life . In summer, you brought out a jar of old wine, intoxicating the campus, intoxicating me. You weren't drunk ; you let me pack my ideals, fill my bag with longing, and, carrying your alluring fragrance, fly towards the blue sky , soaring high, braving the scorching sun, fighting the storms, battling the heat. I was never afraid , because there was a pair of eyes behind me , watching me; because there was someone on the road of autumn, waiting for me , waiting for me in autumn . Autumn is the season of harvest, autumn is the season of falling leaves . When the autumn wind blows and the leaves fall, I will surely return to your side, letting you nestle in my arms. Let our love, our affe...

shallowness and women

When with an unmarried woman, the conversation inevitably revolves around her boyfriend's family background, job, appearance, how good or bad he is to her, and then his clothes, makeup... When with a married woman, in addition to these, there are her children, husband, in-laws, house, car... not to mention those close to her, like food, clothing, housing, and other close relationships. Once the conversation starts, they can chatter for hours without getting tired. This is understandable, but what's incomprehensible is that some women are born with a knack for stirring up trouble, acting like megaphones, adding fuel to the fire, spreading rumors, and sowing discord. They only want others to know that they are their closest confidantes, that they are the most beautiful like a Bodhisattva, and that they are the most sincere.     This is nothing more than a deep-seated contempt for women in the hearts of most men. They are demeaning themselves, interpreting "se...

Talking about death

For thousands of years, Qin Shi Huang sought the elixir of immortality, consuming numerous of them, yet ultimately still perished in his unified empire. Throughout these millennia, many emperors have sought elixirs of immortality, and in doing so, they too began their descent into death. They devoted immense time and energy to this search, yet ultimately, they too perished. No matter their military achievements, in the end, death was inevitable. In ancient times, the death of an emperor was called "jia feng" (驾崩). Many people were buried with the emperor, a practice considered unfortunate—that's the nature of ancient times. However, it's worth noting that so many talented and extraordinary individuals ultimately left this world; old age inevitably means death.     Everyone succumbs to death, beginning with the cry of a newborn child. Death is terrifying, but in my opinion, it's important to understand its complexities with the right mindset. Even emperors t...

Australian male "demon" and female "ghost"

Recently, Australia has produced a male devil, their current "Prime Minister" Abbott, and a female devil, their newly appointed "Foreign Minister" Bishop. These two devils are working together to attack China. I think the Chinese and Australian people should join hands to protect these two and prevent them from causing trouble.     "All nations and countries are fundamentally the same," is a Chinese concept. It roughly means that a country and a small family, though different in size, share similar principles of conduct and interaction with the outside world. Imagine a family where the man is an alcoholic and a woman a prostitute, the woman lazy and gluttonous, and the children gambling—that family will never be harmonious. The same applies to a country; without a good leader and a calm and stable government, the country will not have a bright future. There is a country in the world called Australia, known for its many kangaroos, a tropical region sur...
